America in the End
With the start of Israel's war against Hamas, the subject of eschatological prophecy is once again come to the forefront of the Christian consciousness. Once again, people are asking questions about end times events and America's roll in prophecy.
We are stricken by the fact that while other nations are mentioned by name in the book of Revelation, but America is not. The fact, that there was no America in the first century and no prophecy that says there would be a nation called the United States in the last days, certainly explains this, in part. There is no Russia in the Bible either, but the modern nation of Russia occupies the region of the world once occupied by the people of Magog mentioned in the Book of Ezekiel. Gog, being their king.
Based upon the prophesies in Ezekiel and Revelation. Gog the leader and his nation Magog will be major players in the end times; they will be among the enemies of Israel. When they come against Israel, they will be judged and defeated.
Many Christian scholars have spent time and treasure trying to identify America in Bible prophecy. So far, no one has come up with any definitive evidence of America or any roll that America will play in the end times. This, naturally, begs the question, what of America in the last days?
There are several possibilities. (1) America is not mentioned, by name or geographical region in end times prophecy because there will be no America at that time. America will cease to exist. Much to the chagrin of those who embrace the doctrine of American exceptionalism, it is quite possible for the U.S. to disappear. It is more than obvious that America is in decline. The internal political chaos has already led to the loss of international prestige and influence. Not to mention the fact that there are people in government, today, who are actively engaged in trying to destroy America as we know it, in favor of an ethnocentric dictatorship. These folks are only one election cycle away from accomplishing their goal. Once in the majority in the House of Representatives and the Senate, it will be easy for them to orchestrate an end to democracy and establish a system that permanently enthrones them and their choice of a leader.
(2) The second, less probable, but not impossible scenario is that America will be attacked and defeated in war by some other nation or coalition of nations. In fact, there are some prophets who have just such a word for the Lord. America still has the most potent military in the World, but nuclear weapons tend to level the playing field. A nuclear conflagration would result in the destruction of all nations involved.
(3) The divisions in America have become more pronounced in the last seven years. Even some who self-identify as Evangelical Christians are deliberately exacerbating these divisions by preaching the dogma of hatred in the name of Jesus. Add to that, and in part because of the departure from Scripture embodied in such dogma, we are witnessing an ongoing religious and moral decline in America. All these things contribute to an atmosphere of anger and tension throughout the nation. It is altogether possible that America will be so embroiled in her own internal conflict that she cannot afford to send troops or treasure to the Middle East, where end times events will unfold.
(4). The other possibility is that an apostate America is not mentioned, by name because she will be a part of the one world government of the antichrist. Many would argue that there is going to be a great revival in America, and she will return to God. That is my prayer. I pray continuously pray that God will raise up a prophet, a genuine spiritual reformer who will speak to the issues of the day from a godly perspective and lead the nation to Christ. I am not alone in this, but my concern is that when, and if, God sends revival many in the church will miss it because it will not look like anything we've seen in the past.
In light of all this, what should the Christian do? First, each of us should examine ourselves, in the glaring light of Scripture to make sure that we are in the faith. Secondly, we should get busy evangelizing our families and our friends. We should also pray the words of Scripture, "Even so, come, Lord Jesus!
